Wellbore Pressure Monitoring 

Measurements of the annular pressure during drilling operations have many valuable applications. The tool provides accurate downhole measurement of static and dynamic pressures. Dynamic pressures include both the equivalent circulating density (ECD) and swab and surge pressures from pipe movement when making connections or tripping. Knowledge of these pressures helps to prevent damaging the formation by exceeding the fracture pressure or allowing pressures to drop too low allowing formation fluids to flow into the wellbore. The effectiveness of hole cleaning can be determined by measuring the cuttings build up in the drilling fluid. The occurrence of other drilling hazards can be identified such as shallow water flow events or the onset of annular pickoffs. The tool can also provide accurate leak-off test (LOT) and formation integrity test (FIT) data by measuring the pressure exerted on the formation, creating time savings as it is no longer necessary to circulate and condition the mud prior to the test taking place. Having accurate wellbore pressure measurements will prevent the occurrence of non-productive time events by providing an earlier warning that a problem is developing, allowing the mud system to be maintained in optimum condition to maximize ROP.

In this shale gas well in the Eagle Ford play in Mexico, the primary objective was to drill a horizontal well with maximum lateral exposure within the 10 feet (3 meters) thick production zone. The challenge was to stay in the relatively thin shale pay zone while maintaining an aggressive rate of penetration.

Sperry Drilling services was contracted to drill offshore wells in the Middle East region where the customer required formation pressure points to be taken approximately every 200 feet (61 meters) while drilling the 6-1/8-inch hole sections of multiple extended reach wells. Sperry Drilling ran the GeoTap® formation pressure tester, which extends a test pad against the borehole wall to measure formation pressure, but soon recognized the standard pad design was not ideal in the harsh drilling environment. To address the need for a pad for use in harsher environments, Sperry Drilling responded by designing and introducing a more durable and robust pad design that immediately enabled the GeoTap tester to obtain the pressure samples needed without trips for failure and with zero associated nonproductive time (NPT).

An operator planned the first fork-type multilateral well design in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to be drilled from an offshore platform. The complexity of the program would require advanced geosteering capabilities to achieve maximum reservoir contact and precise placement of the forked-shape laterals with full accessibility for well intervention. The target was just 600 feet (183 meters) south of the platform and required a “pregnant lady” well profile through a very challenging shale formation where historically no directional work is recommended. With only one available platform slot, located on the northwest side, the well would first have to be nudged and turned in the 16-inch hole in order to reduce surface collision risk, and would then encounter a channel at the 13-3/8-inch casing point known to cause huge losses. In the 12 ¼-inch hole, a required open-hole sidetrack would present yet another challenge. And furthermore, the 8-½-inch lateral interval would have to be maintained within the reservoir target of just two feet (0.61 meters) in thickness.
