Understand the loss challenge

Lost circulation is a common and costly challenge in drilling and cementing operations. It occurs when drilling fluid or cement slurry flows uncontrolled into formations with high permeability, fractures, or voids. During cementing, lost circulation can compromise zonal isolation, impede production, and lead to other expensive consequences.

Losses can occur due to natural geological formation features or fractures induced during drilling or cementing. Induced losses happen when the equivalent circulating density (ECD) exceeds the formation fracture pressure and causes the formation to crack. Understanding the root cause of the lost circulation event is critical to design a successful treatment.

Halliburton cementing lost circulation solutions

We offer solutions for various loss scenarios that range from minor seepage losses to total losses. Before we tailor a treatment, it is important to understand the specific loss challenge. Considerations include loss rate, loss type (permeability, fractures, vugs, etc.), loss zone depth,  formation permeability, and fracture size. By focusing on the unique aspects of each challenge, we deliver innovative and effective solutions.

Severe lost circulation while drilling

  • Rapid-set or thixotropic cements, like our SentinelCem™ Pro cement system, for severe to total lost circulation environments, especially in highly fractured and vugular formations

Minor seepage losses while cementing

Moderate to severe losses while cementing

  • Addition of bridging or plugging materials, such as our proprietary BridgeMaker™ lost circulation material portfolio, to cement spacer designs for severe losses
  • Reduction of slurry density with tailored lightweight cement designs

Severe losses while cementing
