Complete a 15,382 ft. lateral section with an engineered drilling solution

REGION - USA / TEXAS REGION - USA / TEXAS

Permian Basin, Upton County, Texas

REGION - USA / TEXAS

Overview

A major operator in the Midland basin collaborated with Sperry Drilling to complete the first 15,382 feet (4,688m) lateral section. The Drilling Engineering Solutions (DES) team from Halliburton Sperry Drilling proposed an engineered drilling solution consisting of the iCruise® intelligent Rotary Steerable System (RSS), GTi drill bit, and NitroForce® high-flow, high-torque motor. The DrillingXpert™ hydraulics modeling software was used to optimize the flow rate for hole cleaning and tool performance.

The iCruise RSS drilled to total depth in two runs eliminating the need for a third run, exceeding the operator’s expectations. By maintaining optimal drilling parameters and activating cruise control on the iCruise intelligent RSS, the operator reduced well time and achieved the required dogleg to steer accurately within the geological target, maximizing asset value.
