World Geothermal Energy Day falls on October 17 every year and offers an opportunity to celebrate the tremendous potential to harness heat deep within the Earth to generate power.  Since 1904, when the first geothermal power plant went online in Larderello, Italy, operators have sought ways to maximize this renewable resource.

Geothermal energy gained significant momentum globally since 2015, with a 27 percent increase in capacity and about 1,159 wells drilled for power projects 1. Next-generation geothermal developments like enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) and advanced geothermal systems (AGS) allow operators to expand outside the geographical limitations typically associated with conventional geothermal systems.

Between 2002 and 2022, Halliburton obtained the most new geothermal patents, with a total of 127 published 2. We help geothermal operators push the boundaries of what is possible, to go hotter and deeper while maximizing asset value.

As the world embraces renewable energy sources, Halliburton engineers solutions to help support energy demand worldwide. We collaborate with geothermal producers, industry leaders, and new energy startups to find more efficient, effective ways to solve the industry’s biggest challenges.

On Geothermal Day, and every day, Halliburton engineers the future of energy.
