North America / DJ Basin
An oil and gas operator in the DJ Basin struggled with high basic sediment and water (BS&W) for approximately three months. The out-of-spec oil caused the processing facility to shut down, which resulted in a loss rate of 10K BOPD. In need of a quick resolution, the operator turned to Halliburton for an economical solution to address the high BS&W and resume production.
During the winter months, the maintenance of system temperatures at levels suitable for proper phase separation became difficult. This temperature issue contributed to the elevated BS&W levels. The operator attempted to mitigate the problem with the addition of oil treaters to increase their temperatures and retention time, but this approach proved uneconomic.
Halliburton engineered a targeted treatment solution within 48 hours of the reported issue. Given that 50 wells fed the facility, Halliburton performed grindouts on the wells to determine those with the highest BS&W. Demulsification chemistry was applied to targeted wells. The chosen solution was a customized and new emulsion breaker, selected for its efficacy and cost-effectiveness.
Within 30 days of the demulsification chemistry application, the facility was returned online at a recovery rate of 10K BOPD. This solution translated to a substantial production increase. The operator recovered approximately $219 million annually in production value.
