Colorado / DJ Basin
A DJ Basin operator focused on horizontal development faced high sediment and water (BS&W) levels in a recently commissioned wellsite. The issue led to a loss of 2,500 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) due to shut-ins. The operator attempted to operate the assets without a chemical solution for two weeks, but the issue remained unresolved. The operator recognized the urgency and turned to Halliburton for remediation.
Halliburton responded and conducted grindouts within 24 hours to assess the severity of the BS&W concerns. Based on the findings, they identified specific wells that required chemical demulsification remediation. The chosen solution was a proven, fast-acting emulsion breaker. This product is prevalent in the field and has demonstrated success in other assets managed by the operator.
The chemical demulsification remediation yielded impressive results. The operator regained the deferred production of 2,500 BOPD. This allowed the facility to come back online. The operator now relies on specialty chemistry for prevention versus remediation and has applied demulsification chemistry across all their facilities. This has resulted in an economic impact of approximately $250 million through the recovery of deferred production.
