Recent offshore discoveries in Kuwait, including Al-Nokhatha and Al-Jazah, highlight the potential of an underexplored stratigraphic play within the shallow marine carbonate reservoir of the Lower Cretaceous Minagish Formation. These hydrocarbon accumulations are not controlled by structural closures, which are prominent in many of the Arabian fields, but likely rely on stratigraphic trapping within carbonate ramps.

In this edition of Subsurface Insights, we explore the regional geology, sequence stratigraphy, and key petroleum systems using Neftex® software to better understand this evolving play. We examine reservoir distribution, facies-controlled trapping mechanisms, progradational and retrogradational lateral facies changes in the carbonate ramp setting, and potential source rock contributions from both the Minagish Formation and the underlying Makhul Formation.

Together, these insights help place the recent Kuwait discoveries within a broader regional context and show how an integrated understanding of depositional systems, facies architecture, and petroleum system elements can help reveal similar prospectivity across the northern Gulf.
