Offshore Colombia in the Southern Caribbean is emerging as a significant frontier for gas exploration, supported by proven biogenic and thermogenic petroleum systems. This edition of Subsurface Insights explores this developing exploration trend in more detail.

We use the Neftex® solutions from Halliburton to help understand the regional geological context and assess the likely presence, depth, and character of potential source rocks offshore Colombia, to help identify future opportunities.

The Sinú and Guajira Offshore basins contain the broadest near-term biogenic and thermogenic opportunities, while the Colombian basin represents a higher-risk, higher-reward frontier. The planned Komodo-1 well could test deeply buried Late Cretaceous source kitchens, but future success in this frontier area will ultimately depend on more data and evolving ideas coming from improved seismic imaging, better source-rock maturity models, and clearer understanding of charge, migration, reservoir, and seal effectiveness.
