While initially developed and continuing to aid hydrocarbon exploration workflows, datasets and products from the Neftex® solution represent over 24 years of continuous effort to characterize the geology of the subsurface. We firmly believe that these diverse and rich datasets are equally valuable in helping enhance the exploration for mineral deposits, geothermal resources or screening favorable sites for carbon storage, as seen in these articles over the last few years.
Continuing our recent theme of critical metals, in this article we discuss the work we have done to produce a first pass global prospectivity mapping tool for magmatic Nickel. The critical metal Nickel has seen a significant increase in demand in the past decade, as it is also a key component in modern electronics and batteries, both essential components in the drive towards electrification and the wider energy transition.
These first pass screening results allow for an efficient starting point for prospectivity mapping in any global location to identify where the geological conditions were favorable, including subsurface and frontier regions. This allows explorers to quickly build up a portfolio of options and then focus attention on more detailed investigations and potential discoveries at the local level. What could have taken months to produce can now be executed in minutes. This allows for more fundamental questions to asked and multiple geological scenarios to be tested in short succession.
