Halliburton employees, family, and friends helped renovate U.S. military veteran Carolyn Gatterson’s home.
For three days in early May, more than 70 volunteers from the Houston area – including Halliburton employees, family, and friends – helped renovate U.S. military veteran Carolyn Gatterson’s home. Rebuilding Together, a non-profit organization on a mission to repair homes, revitalize communities, and rebuild lives, organized the project.
Ms. Gatterson’s home is part of the East Little York neighborhood in Houston– a wooded subdivision and working-class community where many of the original homes are in disrepair. When volunteers arrived at Ms. Gatterson’s home, the paint was chipped, the front patio had tarps for walls, and the floors were rotted and unsafe.
The team quickly went to work. In three days, they repaired the front and back porches, taped and floated drywall, installed floors and trim, and painted the entire house – all at no cost to the homeowner.
Ms. Gatterson was thrilled with the project and spent the better part of three days taking videos of the progress and hugging volunteers.
“God bless your employees and Rebuilding Together for what they are doing,” Ms. Gatterson said. “I am truly, truly thankful.”
Last year, after 29 years of marriage, Ms. Gatterson’s husband passed away. As his health declined, Ms. Gatterson became her husband’s primary caregiver, which made it difficult to repair and maintain their 1950s home.
Years earlier, Mr. Gatterson served in the U.S. Army, and Ms. Gatterson spent two years in the U.S. Navy where she worked in radio and telecommunications. As military veterans, they qualified for assistance from Rebuilding Together. For 40 years, Rebuilding Together has improved the safety and structural integrity of homes owned by low-income elderly, U.S. military veterans, homeowners with disabilities, and working-class families in need.
The renovation projects are often funded by generous donations from organizations such as The Halliburton Charitable Foundation. Last year, the Foundation donated $50,000 to Rebuilding Together through the 2021 Halliburton Charity Golf Tournament. Donations like these allow Rebuilding Together to complete nearly 10,000 rebuild projects nationwide every year.
