In January 2021, Halliburton announced the establishment of a new $1M Business and Engineering Scholarship Fund at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), an HBCU (Historically Black College & University) located in Prairie View, Texas. The program, called the RISE Scholars Program, stands for “Recruiting Inclusive Students into Energy” and provides scholarships, employee mentors, and summer internships to rising juniors in PVAMU’S College of Business (COB) and Roy G. Perry College of Engineering. The mission of the RISE program is to attract, develop, retain, and advance a base of Black employees that reflects the diversity of our communities.

The inaugural cohort of eight students kicked off the program in August 2021 and got the chance to meet with Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Miller. He recognized the students as the first from PVAMU to receive this honor for the 2021-2022 school year (more details in PVAMU’s press release).

“The RISE Scholars Program and our strong relationship with Prairie View A&M is an opportunity to expand our diversity and inclusion mission while building our pipeline of future talent, both of which are high priorities for Halliburton,” said Miller.

In addition to the scholarship, other components of the RISE program include:

  • Professional Development – Skill development training that includes professional, leadership, and technical competencies to help prepare students for professional life after graduation.
  • Mentorship – Scholars are matched with leaders at Halliburton who serve as their mentors.
  • Experiential Learning – Scholars are offered summer internships that align their educational paths with their career goals.

“The opportunities are endless, and I have been blessed to be awarded this amazing scholarship,” said Kennedy Dent, a junior chemical engineering major and RISE scholar at PVAMU. “Being the first of anything is an honor because you serve as an example for those to follow; I am paving the way for someone else! I was chosen for a reason, and it is my job to fulfill that purpose.”

This month we host Dr. Ruth Simmons, president of PVAMU, for a fireside chat with Myrtle Jones, our senior vice president of Tax, which will be broadcasted to all employees around the world. This conversation will center on The Future of Work: Talent, Technology and Transformation.

BELIEVE, an Employee Resource Group (ERG) at Halliburton, will host the event. BELIEVE’s mission is to positively impact Halliburton’s diverse and inclusive culture by enhancing the attraction, retention, development and advancement of Black employees.

“We are grateful for Halliburton’s commitment to the success of our engineering and business students,” said Simmons. “As the shape of the workforce changes, leaders must lay the foundation for talent and technology to come together. The RISE program is one such opportunity.”

The deadline for the next round of RISE Scholar applicants is March 15, 2022. If you know a student at PVAMU who would be interested in this program, please share this link: pvamu.academicworks.com/opportunities, where they can learn more about the criteria.
