Convert existing observation well into a dual-function observation/producer well

To extend the productive life of a mature field in the Middle East, an operator collaborated with Halliburton to convert a 35-year-old observation well into a dual-function observation and production well. The retrofit multilateral solution allowed the operator to maintain reservoir monitoring while adding a producing lateral leg within the same well slot.
This approach used existing infrastructure, minimized disruption, and avoided the need for additional wells. The IsoRite® multilateral intervention system provided through-completion access to both the main bore and lateral, while the XtremeGrip® MLT anchor system ensured robust junction integrity. The strategy delivered economic reservoir contact and preserved long-term intervention flexibility.
The operator required a solution that would maintain the integrity and functionality of the existing observation well while adding a lateral for production. It was critical to isolate, monitor, and produce from the lateral without compromising the operational role of the main bore. The intervention system needed to support rigless access and allow future interventions through the completion without sacrificing well integrity.
Halliburton designed a retrofit multilateral well using the IsoRite® multilateral completion system and the XtremeGrip® MLT anchor system. The team converted the observation well into a dual-function well that monitors and produces from the same well slot. The IsoRite® system enabled rigless intervention access to both the main bore and the lateral.
The XtremeGrip MLT anchor system secured the junction and eliminated the need for additional infrastructure. This solution preserved the observation capabilities of the main bore and added production functionality, which optimized field development and reduced operational complexity.
