In 2020, Halliburton launched its Sustainability Recognition Awards, which acknowledge employee efforts to enhance sustainability within our product service lines, support departments, and the countries in which we operate.

“Halliburton is a community of high-performing, dedicated employees intent on continuous improvement. Incorporating continuous improvement into our sustainability risk management approach, recognizing our employees’ efforts, and then sharing best practices was a natural step in our development as a sustainable organization,” said Smitha Hariharan, manager of Global Sustainability.

Since its inception, teams from regions around the world have nominated nearly 40 projects for the Awards. Each year, three teams are recognized in one of three categories: Most Impactful Environmental Initiative; Most Sustainable Operation, Service, or Technology; and Best Social Impact Initiative. Most recently, projects in Ecuador, Colombia, and the U.S. won the 2022 Sustainability Recognition Program awards.

2022 Most Impactful Environmental Initiative: Water Conservation Project (Ecuador)

Local Halliburton teams in Ecuador installed a water treatment plant to reuse wastewater from the wash bay. The treated water is used multiple times in the equipment and vehicle washing process, which reduced the amount of fresh water used to carry out local operations and saved on disposal costs. This resulted in reuse of 216,000 gallons of water annually.

2022 Most Sustainable Operation, Service or Technology Initiative: Rethinking Sustainable Features of Existing Technology, Baroid (Colombia)

Last year, a Halliburton Baroid team in Colombia worked closely with a local customer to address a challenge in their deep-well drilling environment. The team installed and used the BaraG-Force™ vertical cuttings dryer (VCD) system to enable the customer to efficiently clean oil-based mud (OBM) from their cuttings and maximize fluid recovery.

Halliburton and the customer achieved positive performance with the new process, which allowed them to comply with environmental regulations and reduce oil retained in cuttings. The team recovered 3,746 barrels of OBM, and the customer reused the recovered OBM in the same well. This process improvement reduced the need for fresh OBM, which saved the customer money and reduced the cost of waste transportation and disposal by more than 23%. The installation also reduced emissions related to new OBM and the movement of vehicles to final disposal sites.

2022 Best Social Impact Initiative: Bentonite Performance Minerals Reclamation of Abandoned Mine Site (Wyoming)

Halliburton Bentonite Performance Minerals (BPM) performed voluntary reclamation on nearby lands previously mined by other industries. The BPM team used equipment to contour the mined surface, provided suitable soils and native seed mix to reclaim the surface land, and created functional grazing land for the local landowners, which benefit the neighboring communities and wildlife.

Over the course of 10 years, the Halliburton BPM group volunteered and restored more than 1,000 acres of land back to its natural habitat. The group received three statewide safety awards along with the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (WDEQ) 2022 Excellence in Mining Reclamation Award.

“All of the winning projects represent important sustainability initiatives Halliburton supports, and the resulting benefits to the environment, the Company, and our customers exceeded our expectations,” Hariharan said.
