Overview

A major international operator in the Ivory Coast collaborated with Halliburton to execute a deepwater water-injection well requiring a long, horizontal, openhole, non-cemented, slotted-liner lower completion. Halliburton deployed the XtremeGrip® expandable liner hanger (ELH) system with a VersaFlex® running tool equipped with a soft-release ball seat (SRBS), marking the first SRBS deployment outside the Middle East. This milestone demonstrated Halliburton’s global adaptability and leadership in deepwater completions.

Challenge

The operator needed to displace oil-based mud (OBM) with clean brine after setting the liner hanger to minimize formation damage. This required precise execution to maintain formation integrity. Additionally, mobilizing SRBS-enabled tools to the Ivory Coast posed logistical challenges within a tight project timeline.

Solution

Halliburton recommended a single-trip solution using the XtremeGrip ELH system and VersaFlex running tool with SRBS. This configuration enabled multiple full-pressure expansion cycles, full circulation regain without pressure surge, and post-set displacement without pulling out of hole. The SRBS system’s pressure tolerance and controlled pressure relief supported formation-friendly operations and reduced rig time.

A global support team ensured tool readiness and logistics execution under tight deadlines. The system enabled the operator to complete the displacement in a single trip while preserving formation integrity.

Results

The operation was executed with zero nonproductive time (NPT) or cost of poor quality (COPQ). The single-trip solution reduced rig time by approximately eight hours and delivered an estimated cost savings of USD 150,000. The successful deployment of SRBS technology in a new region reinforced Halliburton’s ability to deliver customized, high-performance solutions in complex environments.

Key differentiator

Halliburton’s ability to mobilize advanced technology, supported by coordinated product management, global operations, and local service delivery, enabled a customized solution that addressed complex well challenges and preserved formation integrity.
