Halliburton and Aker BP revolutionized offshore cementing using Halliburton’s LOGIX™ automated cementing technology.
In a remarkable stride towards innovation, Halliburton and Aker BP revolutionized offshore cementing using Halliburton’s LOGIX™ automated cementing technology. This breakthrough recently celebrated a significant milestone: 400 successful jobs across four rigs.
“Efficiency through digitalization and automation is a primary focus for us,” said a representative from Aker BP. “LOGIX automated cementing is key to the successful execution of this strategy.”
Here’s how the system works – the cement operator, located in an Onshore Realtime Center, can control the cement unit offshore. Once the operator programs the cement job, the LOGIX automation makes necessary adjustments without human intervention to ensure a steady delivery. For example, if there are bulk cement delivery issues on the rig, the unit will reduce its rate automatically to maintain a steady density. Once the job starts, if the operator loses internet connection on the rig, the platform will continue pumping at planned rate and density. Also, the platform will stop at the planned volume, start the unit self-cleaning process, and shut down. Over 300 commands are now reduced to less than seven steps. This automated technology embeds decades of Halliburton’s expertise and best practices to help ensure improved service quality with a consistent and high-quality job every time. The system’s remote capabilities permit the centralization and sharing of experienced personnel across multiple offshore rigs from onshore to provide enhanced real-time oversight and reduced HSE exposure.
This cementing milestone with Aker BP is significant because it supports our focus on the consistent, high-quality execution of every job, every day. Our collaboration with Aker BP to implement LOGIX automated cementing aligns with our goal to automate and remotely execute wellsite operations through digital technologies to improve reliability, consistency, and efficiency.
Halliburton began field tests at the end of 2020 and achieved key development milestones, such as:
Across the 400 jobs completed for Aker BP, LOGIX automated cementing performed with zero health, safety, or quality incidents. This proven technology has reliably delivered offshore cement jobs at significantly lower costs and risks.
Future opportunities lie in remote operations, where rigs far from support bases can benefit from a remote operating center staffed with experienced personnel. This model, supported by internet connectivity, allows for supervision of cement jobs from afar, reducing the need for on-site mobilization. Halliburton aims to extend this model to other projects and foster close operational partnerships that generate value for their customers.
