Earlier this year, Halliburton employees volunteered with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on the goIT Student Technology Awareness Program, an experiential, immersive program that seeks to inspire students to study science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and in particular, computer science. During their goIT journey, middle and early high school students work in teams to develop, prototype, and pitch a digital innovation (in this case, an app) that solves or addresses one of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. The program also encourages students to design with empathy and create tech for good.

For months Halliburton employees mentored students in the Aldine and Humble, Texas school districts, inspiring them to design technological innovations to address challenges facing our communities. Many Halliburton volunteers including Shane Miller, senior director, Application Services, and Ashish Mehta, senior director, Global IT Infrastructure, were instrumental in bringing the students’ ideas to life.

In a culmination event with the top six teams from each school, the students presented their idea storyboards to a panel of judges, including Susanna Sabbagh, vice president, BP account, and Ken Braud, senior vice president and chief information officer, and fielded questions about their app development process. Some of the issues students addressed were homelessness and poverty, food insecurity, mental health, and environmental improvements. The Halliburton Charitable Foundation awarded each of the six teams with a donation to purchase STEM equipment for their classrooms.

STEM jobs are predicted to grow in the next decade at a higher rate than non-STEM occupations. Halliburton believes that encouraging students to pursue careers in technology at an early age will inspire the next generation of changemakers. As a leader in bringing digital technology to the energy industry, Halliburton is proud to bring the goIT opportunity to our communities.
