Safe and efficient delivery of CO2 to the target formations

Flow control is a critical component of CCUS systems. It involves the effective management of fluid flow within the injection well to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of CO2 to the target formations. Proper phase management is essential during CO2 injection to maintain a stable hydrostatic head, minimize the risk of hydrate formation, and prevent equipment failure related to thermodynamic flashing and the Joule-Thompson effect.

Stable CO2 phase management requires downhole monitoring and pressure control. To overcome this challenge, Halliburton has patented automated techniques for flow and phase management to improve well performance, sweep efficiency, and long-term storage behaviour during the injection period. Furthermore, managing the fluid phase during injection is crucial for optimizing the storage capacity of the reservoir. Effective flow control technologies can also be used to prevent unwanted flow back of aggressive fluids potentially allowing for a more cost effective material selection for the completion.
