Intelligent Completions



Halliburton's SmartWell® system intelligent completion technology helps operators to optimize production without costly well intervention. Reliable and fit-for-purpose SmartWell systems enable operators to collect, transmit and analyze downhole data; remotely control selected reservoir zones; and maximize reservoir efficiency by:

  • Increasing production. Commingling of production from different reservoir zones increases and accelerates production and shortens field life.
  • Increasing ultimate recovery. Selective zonal control enables effective management of water injection, gas and water breakthrough and individual zone productivity.
  • Reducing capital expenditure. The ability to produce from multiple reservoirs through a single wellbore reduces the number of wells required for field development, thereby lowering drilling and completion costs. Size and complexity of surface handling facilities are reduced by managing water through remote zonal control.
  • Reducing operating expenditure. Remote configuration of wells optimizes production without costly well intervention. In addition, commingling of production from different reservoir zones shortens field life, thereby reducing operating expenditures.

A SmartWell system completion consists of some combination of zonal isolation devices, interval control devices, downhole control systems, permanent monitoring systems, surface control and monitoring systems, distributed temperature sensing systems, data acquisition and management software and system accessories.

A major oil and gas operator in southeast Asia required good zonal isolation of a multilayered, unconsolidated, stacked reservoir possessing several oil, water, and gas zones. The unique trajectory of the horizontal wellbore made access to mechanical flow control devices costly and problematic, therefore making it necessary to remotely control or shut off the production from multiple zones in the advent of unwanted gas or water production. The use of gravel packing techniques and sand screens were selected as the preferred method of sand control for the single, horizontal section that includes three to five zones. A series of external annular barriers to limit or eliminate zonal crossflow was a requirement while ensuring that the gravel pack of the entire zone was not negatively impacted.
