Unconventional Resources

Interest in developing unconventional gas and oil has accelerated in recent years as conventional reservoirs have become increasingly difficult to find and produce. From an emerging resource 10 years ago—and a mostly overlooked resource 20 years ago—unconventional gas and oil are now a core business of many large independent producers and a growing number of major operating companies. For all of them, Halliburton systematically evaluates each unique project, tapping into the people, global infrastructure, processes and partnerships it takes to successfully and economically overcome the challenges posed by extreme temperatures, pressures, depths and  other “unconventional” conditions.

Please visit booth #5225 to listen to a group of seasoned Halliburton experts talk about the best and latest solutions for developing unconventional resources.

PermStim™: Clean, Residue-Free Fluid System

Aaron Russell

PermStimSM fracturing service uses a virtually residue-free fluid system that is an alternative to guar-based fracturing fluids that contain 8 to 15 percent insoluble residue. The almost total absence of insoluble residue in PermStim™ fluid is providing better production. A study of all currently available comparable production data showed an improvement of around 27 percent compared to production from offset wells stimulated with guar-based fluid systems. PermStim fluid provides enhanced proppant-pack permeability, minimal formation damage, excellent proppant transport, tunable viscosities, and both instant and delayed crosslinking. It has performed well at bottomhole static temperatures (BHST) ranging from 100 to 300°F (38 to 149°C). Additionally, PermStim fluid is salt tolerant. Since its release in 2012, PermStim fluid has been used in over 230 wells for 30 different operators. PermStim fluid’s unmatched cleanup capabilities, robust service package, and rapidly growing record of achievement all suggest a good potential for its success in offshore applications.

Efficiency that Saves Time and Money TDReam™

Svein Ravndal

In a traditional reaming-while-drilling BHA, the reamer is placed above the RSS and LWD tools, creating a long rathole and requiring an extra trip to enlarge hole to TD. Challenged to design a tool to increase efficiency, Halliburton delivered a solution with the added benefits of optimized steerability and fluid flow, and reduced tool length, based on the proven reliability of the NBR® reamer technology. Run in conjunction with a traditional reamer, TDReam™ is Halliburton's newest downhole innovation designed to significantly reduce rathole length and reach TD in one run.

A New Annular Barricade That Is a Resin to Celebrate

Paul Jones

Halliburton’s annular barricade is based on a resin, and designed to help provide wellbore integrity thus contributing to environmental sustainability and social responsibility. WellLock™ resin can act as an annular barricade against water and gas leaks. Applications include situations where water or gas leaks need to be prevented or remediated. WellLock resin is not a cement system. The Poisson’s ratio of WellLock resin is closer to that of rubber (inherently flexible); cement is closer to that of glass (inherently stiff).  Some formulations of our resin have achieved compressive strength of up to 48,500 psi (334 MPa).

A Smart Approach to an Intelligent Solution

Martin Staelens

Are periodic replacements of electric submersible pumps (ESPs) hindering you from implementing intelligent completion technology? Do you have concerns about deploying intelligent completions in long horizontal completions? If you answered “yes,” then Halliburton's SmartWell® Disconnect tools are the answer. With these tools, intelligent completions can now be reliably implemented without incurring high workover costs while benefitting from the reservoir optimization ability that intelligent completions bring.
