7" Foam Wiper Ball Successfully Pumped through Drill Bit

Location: Gulf of Mexico

Operator's Challenge

The operator wanted to wipe the drill pipe clean after performing a shoe squeeze through 5-1/2" drill pipe with an 8-1/2" bit with three 20/64 nozzles installed. The squeeze was done at 9,200 ft TVD/MD with a bottomhole circulating temperature (BHCT) of 165ºF.

Halliburton's Solution

A 7" foam wiper ball was recommended. Per Technology Bullentin No. TTT-03-025, the 7" ball will pass through a one-inch restriction.

Economic Value Created

The 7" foam wiper ball cleaned the drill pipe successfully and passed through the bit with little increase in pump pressure. Prior to pumping the foam wiper ball, the operator was spending up to three extra hours per trip out of the hole to beat on each stand of drill pipe to clean out cementing debris.

The estimated economic value to the customer was $18,800.
