Business Challenge
Over the last 20 years, oil companies have evolved from highly centralized, monolithic organizations into much more flexible, globally distributed, asset-team-centered organizations. But with global distribution also comes the challenges associated with dispersed resources and knowledge. This can introduce a lot of complexity to data managers’ jobs. They face a constant struggle to identify and centralize information resources for worldwide asset teams so that these teams can make critical business decisions. This data often includes types such as E&P spatial data, in ESRI ArcIMS® or Landmark ZGF files. Data managers need to be able to view data from disparate sources but retain spatial information to perform base mapping.
They need to be able to move this information quickly. In addition, they must do this in a cost-effective and timely manner. How can data managers provide stakeholders with the information they require and meet the above needs?

Overview
PowerExplorer® software is a Web-based GIS data management tool with advanced capabilities to browse and manage spatial and tabular E&P data. Its tools are tailored to meet the needs of all members of the asset team, including data managers, technicians, data operators, geophysicists, geologists and engineers. The PowerExplorer system, with its capability to federate data from the master data store, project data store and corporate data store, provides these members with a complete picture of data availability. Companies or users access data directly from these repositories, avoiding the risks of data duplication or corruption and thereby minimizing uncertainty. In addition, by viewing data in context data quality can be easily verified using the PowerExplorer software’s specialized viewers for E&P workflows.

PowerExplorer technology features a three-tier architecture: a data tier, an access and business logic middle tier, and a presentation tier. At the data tier level, PowerExplorer software provides a robust interface for administering, managing, manipulating and accessing the data stores to which the PowerExplorer system is connected. At the middle tier, PowerExplorer software leverages an open-access generic framework through PowerHub™ software that allows companies to extend their access to other third-party or proprietary data stores through vendor-neutral data connect modules. Accessing these multiple data sources through a single user interface provides a holistic environment for rapid data analysis and improved decisionmaking. Lastly, at the presentation tier, users may access their entitled data from anywhere through a secure Web environment. Spatial data is presented and analyzed using the latest ESRI Web technology, so you can be sure your interpreters have the best and latest tools with which to conduct their analyses.
