Gas Analysis

During the drilling process any gas present in the rock cuttings or exposed formation can be released into the drilling fluid. When the drilling fluid is circulated to surface, specialized degassing equipment can obtain a sample of that gas, which can then be continuously analyzed to determine its composition. The results of gas analysis when combined with geological sample description and drilling parameter observations yield information about reservoir fluid type, fluid contacts, compartmentalization and formation type.
