JIHUA GROUP CORPORATION SELECTS KBR FOR SUPERFLEX(SM) TECHNOLOGY FOR 200,000 TON/YEAR PROPYLENE PLANT

HOUSTON, Texas – KBR (NYSE: KBR), the engineering, construction and services subsidiary of Halliburton (NYSE: HAL), has been awarded a basic design engineering package for a new production facility with a nominal propylene capacity of 200,000 ton/year utilizing SUPERFLEXSM technology. This unit will be added to an existing industrial site in Jilin City, Jilin Province of the People’s Republic of China, and will be owned and operated by the Jilin Chemical (JiHua) Group Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). China Petroleum Engineering Company, Northeast Branch Company will perform the detailed engineering.

SUPERFLEX technology is a fluidized catalytic cracking process which converts low-value refinery and ethylene plant streams with a high degree of selectivity to propylene, ethylene and high octane gasoline. It is exclusively licensed worldwide by KBR and is based on Lyondell Chemical Company’s developments and patents. The first commercial SUPERFLEX unit is currently under start-up for SASOL in South Africa. The JiHua Propylene Unit will be the second one of its kind in the world and the first commercial SUPERFLEX unit in the Asia Pacific region.

“SUPERFLEX technology provides producers another means of making propylene from low-value feedstocks,” said Tim Challand, KBR’s senior vice president of Downstream and Technology. “In addition to expanding options for making one the world’s most widely used petrochemicals, propylene, SUPERFLEX complements KBR’s current olefins technology and fluid bed design expertise.” Challand added that KBR olefins and fluid catalytic cracking technology is used in a large percentage of today’s petrochemical and refinery complexes.

“Construction of a propylene plant with a capacity of 200,000 tons/year, using KBR’s SUPERFLEX technology, will not only sort out the need for increased propylene during China’s 11th Five-Year-Plan period, but will also provide a new approach to deep processing the low-value olefins byproducts from oil refineries and crackers in the region. It will be of great significance in that it will better adjust the products structure in the Jilin chemical zone and make full use of the feed value,” Mr. Li Dianjun, vice president and chief engineer of JiHua, was quoted as saying.

Jilin Chemical (JiHua) Group Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) with headquarters in Jilin City, Jilin Province, China. Its core business is deep and extended chemical processing.
