FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 03, 2004
HALLIBURTON ENGINEER NAMED NORTH TEXAS
INVENTOR OF THE YEAR
HOUSTON, Texas - Flint George, a senior technical advisor with Halliburton's (NYSE: HAL) Energy Services Group, was recently named North Texas Inventor of the Year for 2003 by the Dallas-Fort Worth Intellectual Property Law Association.
George was chosen because of the economic impact that his 55 inventions have had on the industry, particularly his patents for the Differential Pressure Actuated Vent Assembly and the Time Delay Pressure Actuated Firing Head.
Roger Watson, a technical professional leader in Halliburton's Tools, Testing and Tubing Conveyed Perforating (TTTCP) product service line, said that George is considered a valuable asset to the industry because many of his patents have become the standard that has changed the way wells are perforated and completed today.
George's invention of the Differential Pressure Actuated Vent Assembly allows an oil or gas well to be perforated in an underbalance state while existing perforations or communication to the reservoir are present. This allows the perforating guns to be detonated with open communication to the atmosphere and the hydrostatic fluid level to be at the optimum level of underbalance at the same time. Without this technology, wells of this type would have to be perforated in a balance or overbalance state, reducing the amount of cleanup that underbalance perforating provides. The economic impact of this technology is approximately $28 million over the past 20 years.
The Time Delay Pressure Actuated Firing Head was invented in response to the need to allow a five to seven minute delay before detonation during tubing conveyed perforating (TCP). TCP technology had used a mechanical drop bar firing mechanism for the past 13 years and needed a time delay firing head to initiate the TCP firing heads in wells that were in more challenging environments. George's invention provided the means to initiate the gun and allow a five to seven minute delay before detonation, thus allowing the operator to bleed off the actuation pressure and let the guns fire with the well in underbalance state. The economic impact for this firing head is approximately $585 million and is still today, Halliburton's most reliable firing head.
