LANDMARK RELEASES DRILL-TO-THE-EARTH MODEL SYSTEM
- Breakthrough technology and deeper integration enable drilling operations to be viewed within the earth model -
HOUSTON, Texas - Landmark Graphics Corporation, a wholly owned business unit of Halliburton (NYSE: HAL), today announced that they have released the Drill-to-the-Earth Model™ system. The system combines a broad range of applications including Presgraf™, OpenWire™, DecisionSpace AssetView™, DecisionSpace TrackPlanner™ and DepthTeam Express™ to enable asset team members to rapidly design wells and visualize real-time earth models and wellbore updates from drilling operations in a 3-D environment.
"Drilling safe, productive wells is the ultimate goal of every asset team. The new Landmark Drill-to-the-Earth Model system connects all of the members of the asset teams - including geoscientists and drilling and production engineers - directly to ongoing operations in the field and each other through a dynamic, shared earth model of the subsurface," said Andy Lane president and CEO of Landmark.
The technology that comprises the Drill-to-the-Earth Model system was designed for asset team real- time decision-making. The integration of DepthTeam Express and Presgraf as part of this system provides unprecedented accuracy in the determination of pore pressures both prior to and during the drilling process. OpenWire enables the real-time decision-making process by loading WITSML MWD/LWD and trajectory data into OpenWorks® in real-time. DecisionSpace AssetView enables the asset team members to visualize the results of real-time earth model data and enables them to make more accurate and rapid decisions. DecisionSpace TrackPlanner provides for visual drag-and-drop path planning so that updates to the path plans can be made based on the real-time trajectory data. Real-time decision-making, pore pressure prediction, wellpath updates, visualization of drilling and earth model data are all key elements of drilling safer, more productive and less expensive wellbores.
"An in-house prototype for data integration and real-time decision-making was developed in 1999, as a part of Statoil's DART R&D projects. This system has now been used at the Heidrun asset, resulting in new work processes, reduced operational costs and increased oil recovery. This promising technology and gained experiences was the driving force for Statoil to implement the new WITSML standard. Today, we see commercial products evolving form this work," said Ivar Haarstad, DART project leader, Statoil.
Reservoir complexity and the need to capture hidden or missed reserves through infill drilling in mature fields requires a more precise approach to drilling operations than in the past. With the Drill-to-Earth-Model system, drillers and geoscientists are able to see exactly where they are in the reservoir at all times, making safer, more cost-effective and precise well-bore planning and execution possible.
