FOSTERING WORK AROUND THE WORLD
Young engineering graduates meet in Darwin to share experiences
CANBERRA - Whether it's helping to design bridges on the Adelaide-Darwin rail line, working trackside on the Australian Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne, acting as a technical consultant for the Olympics in Athens, or modeling a flood plain for the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, Kellogg Brown & Root's (KBR's) young engineering graduates get to build project experience on a global scale.
Eighty-three of the company's 85 graduates located Australia-wide fly into Darwin this weekend for the company's 2003 Graduate Conference.
The conference, at Mirambeena Resort, is on Saturday, 30 May, with graduates travelling to Katherine on Sunday 31 May to see progress on the Adelaide-Darwin rail line, a KBR project.
Janet Lake, the Institution of Engineers Director for the Northern Territory, will present KBR with a certificate acknowledging its Graduate Development Program on Saturday at 10 am.
Andrew Fletcher, KBR's Vice-President Asia Pacific, who is speaking at the conference, says KBR looks to recruit-and retain-the best and brightest graduates across engineering and the sciences.
'In return we offer the right experience, opportunities, training and support so critical in the early stages of a career.
'This conference brings together graduates, senior management, technical leaders and industry experts and is a key feature of the graduate program.
'As well as knowledge transfer between graduates and across disciplines, the conference is about developing strong working relationships and corporate awareness, building trust in each other and the company.'
KBR (incorporating the Kinhill Group) employs some 3,400 people in the Asia-Pacific region. In the NT, KBR joined forces with Darwin's Colless O'Neill two years ago to combine 50 years' experience in the NT in civil and structural engineering and project management. Major projects under way include the Adelaide-Darwin rail line; the Darwin Convention Centre and Wharf Precinct; and railway passenger terminals in Darwin, Katherine and Tennant Creek.
