NEW BAROID TECHNOLOGY INHIBITS REACTIVE BENTONITIC SHALES AND INCREASES PENETRATION RATES

DENVER, Colorado and HOUSTON, Texas - The Baroid product service line of Halliburton Energy Services (HES) has developed CRYSTAL-DRIL™ clear water drilling fluid, a clay-free system that is designed to inhibit reactive bentonitic shales, eliminate bit balling, and enhance penetration rates (ROP). HES is a business unit of Halliburton (NYSE: HAL).

"Optimal drilling performance can be achieved with relatively low concentration of the multifunctional polymer responsible for the system's power inhibition and flocculation properties," said Jerry Thorstad, principal technical professional, Baroid product service line, Halliburton.

A CRYSTAL-DRIL system can be formulated with fresh water, brine or produced water. On the wells drilled using the product, the CRYSTAL-DRIL system consistently has decreased drilling days and provided a gauge hole, significantly lowering operational costs. Two operators have reported an average reduction of 20 percent in open hole logging costs, especially in coal bed methane wells, due to better wellbore stability.

In addition, cementing costs dropped by 15 percent for one operator due to the gauge hole typically produced by drilling with the CRYSTAL-DRIL system. Fine solids settle rapidly due to the system's increased flocculation strength, helping to maintain low fluid densities and high performance drilling conditions.
