HALLIBURTON COMMERCIALIZES MRILab
-The industry’s only magnetic resonance technology to provide
accurate, down-hole fluid measurements in real-time-
Houston, Texas - Halliburton Energy Services through its logging and perforating product service line and its NUMAR division, today announced the global commercialization of MRILab®, a unique logging tool with the ability to analyze key reservoir fluid properties, including fluid type, viscosity and gas-to-oil ratio, in real-time at reservoir temperature and pressure. MRILab has the capability of analyzing reservoir fluid samples in wells using oil-based mud systems to determine mud filtrate contamination and necessary pumping time. The real-time in-situ measurements provide more accurate reservoir information, better economic decisions and reduced rig costs. “MRILab is a breakthrough in the development of nuclear magnetic resonance imaging technology for the energy industry,” said Tim Probert, vice president, Drilling and Formation Evaluation, Halliburton. “This technology provides superior reservoir fluid identification and characterization in real-time. These measurements are more precise than optical type devices and it adds to our arsenal of total formation evaluation strategy.”
MRILab operates as an integral component of the Reservoir Description Tool™ (RDT), making laboratory quality measurements on reservoir fluids that are necessary for reservoir engineering and completion design. It allows the properties of hydrocarbons to be immediately available in real-time compared to conventional laboratory measurements. The down-hole measurements are more accurate, as a result of being at reservoir temperature and pressure, eliminating the need to reconstruct down-hole conditions in the laboratory environment.
On a recent project in Indonesia, MRILab allowed the operator to eliminate the need for retrieving samples for identifying production fluid type. Without MRILab, the usual procedure involves pumping a minimum of one hour on each zone to collect a representative sample. MRILab down-hole fluid-typing was accomplished on an average of 20 minutes for each zone. This translates to a savings of five to eight hours of rig time on a typical well evaluation.
