CITY OF HOUSTON/HALLIBURTON-LED GROUP PROVIDES ASSISTANCE TO SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS
HOUSTON, Texas – The City of Houston's Office of Affirmative Action and Contract Compliance and Halliburton Company (NYSE: HAL), recently hosted an eight-session training series on the "Fundamentals of Small Business Management" for small, and minority- and women-owned businesses. Other sponsors of the event included CH2M Hill, the Port of Houston Authority, the Houston Minority Business Council, the Women's Business Enterprise Alliance, and the Houston Small Business Development Corporation.
"Halliburton has long been a supporter of small disadvantaged and minority- and women- owned businesses," said Linda Holloway, Halliburton's manager of Global Supplier Diversity. "We have implemented a corporate supplier diversity plan, which is intended to assure fair business opportunities for small, and minority- and women-owned businesses. "We're also very happy with the response we received from the City of Houston and other organizations that supported this training series, as well as the response we received from small disadvantaged, and minority- and women-owned businesses."
Approximately 45 persons from the targeted businesses attended the sessions over an eight-week period. Held at the Halliburton facility in Houston, the training sessions consisted of presentations on The Importance of a Business Plan, Understanding Financial Statements and Cash Flow Management, Small Business Tax Concerns, Marketing versus Advertising, Development Proposals/Contracting, Project Management, Strategic Planning/Strategic Alliances, and a panel discussion on How to Do Business. In addition, Richard Huebner, executive director of HMBC, and Susan Repka, certification manager of the Women's Business Enterprise Alliance of Houston, presented information on the benefits of becoming certified.
For its efforts in supporting small disadvantaged, and minority-owned and women-owned businesses, Halliburton was awarded a proclamation from the City of Houston. John De Leon, director of Affirmative Action and Contract Compliance for the City of Houston, presented the proclamation to John Quinn, vice president of KBR Engineering, Procurement, and Construction. Other honors Halliburton received this year, pertaining to its supplier diversity efforts, include the Supplier of the Year award from Shell Oil Company, and designation of eighth of the Top 25 Houston corporations supporting Women Business owners by the Women's Business Alliance Enterprise of Houston.
