LANDMARK RELEASES OPENWIRE FOR REAL-TIME DRILLING
Innovative technology for loading real-time drilling data into OpenWorks using the new WITSML standard
HOUSTON, Texas - Landmark Graphics Corporation, a wholly owned business unit of Halliburton (NYSE:HAL), announced today the release of OpenWire. This new technology allows operators to load real-time drilling data such as MWD/LWD, directly into OpenWorks using the new Wellsite Information Transfer Standard Markup Language (WITSML). OpenWire provides an open interface to data from any drilling service provider and enhances Landmark's "Drill-to-the-Earth-Model" real-time well targeting solution.
"This is a leap forward in drilling and real-time data interface technology, and an integral part of the Halliburton Energy Services vision to be the undisputed leader in Real Time Reservoir Solutions," said Andy Lane, president and CEO of Landmark. "The OpenWire solution enables better, faster decisions for drilling optimization and well targeting."
The new standard, WITSML, was developed jointly by a consortium including Landmark, bp, Statoil, Shell and other oil and gas software and service providers.
"Statoil has been participating as a partner and test site for OpenWire during the entire development phase, and we find it to be a very useful tool. Enabling seamless import of real time rig-site data into OpenWorks, makes this tool very important in the work process during the drilling of new wells," said Frode Lande, senior system consultant, Statoil. "Because OpenWire is built on WITSML, which is based on international standards, it is a future-oriented tool and thus can be used against WITSML servers from any vendor. This is especially important, since there are usually several different service companies involved in drilling operations and one does not want to adapt the work process nor the software to the service company currently on the rig site."
"We are proud to incorporate the new WITSML standard," said Bill Sanstrom, Landmark vice president, Drilling, Production, and Economic Systems. "This new technology adds to Landmark's leadership position in applying real-time data using new, open industry standards."
OpenWire enables borehole position, formation data and other down-hole, real-time data to be loaded in near real-time into OpenWorks, the industry standard project data management system. Once in OpenWorks, the real-time drilling information can be viewed by earth-modeling, drilling and interpretation applications from Landmark, as well as other vendors. OpenWire data will be used to compare current borehole position with the well plan and will also compare the predicted subsurface earth model against the actual measurements fed from down-hole during drilling. An OpenWire equipped drilling platform will support far more rapid evaluation and decision-making than current, non-real-time systems. Use of this technology provides for near real-time earth model updates and drilling operational updates that help target the earth model more accurately. These updates enable operators to drill more efficient and productive wells.
