LANDMARK GRAPHICS ESTABLISHES NORWEGIAN TECHNICAL CENTER OF EXCELLENCE
WITH IBM AND INTEL
-E&P companies to benefit from Linux-based data and application management center-
DALLAS, TX - Landmark Graphics Corporation, a wholly owned business unit of Halliburton (NYSE: HAL), today announced it has established a Technical Center of Excellence in Stavanger, Norway in cooperation with IBM and Intel. This facility will enable all multi-national E&P companies operating in the North Sea to more effectively manage their business-critical data and improve their return on investment.
The Technical Center of Excellence will be located at PetroData, Landmark's state-of-the-art data management, application and e-business hosting facility. The center will be focused on combining Intel-based computing platforms from IBM running the Linux operating system with Landmark's industry-leading software solutions. Customers will have the utmost in data security and 24x365 access to the PetroBank family of comprehensive data management technologies as well as the complete suite of Landmark R2003 applications ported to Linux.
"The E&P industry in Norway has always been innovative," said Andy Lane, Landmark's president and CEO. "Norway is the birthplace of our PetroBank technology with its multi-client, network-centric architecture that provides online real-time access to data, enabling asset teams to work faster and better. Working with IBM and Intel in creating this Technical Center of Excellence, we are continuing our commitment to an "open source" platform by porting PetroBank to Linux. Our scalable, open systems approach offers customers enormous freedom of choice."
Landmark provides flexible and secure access to project data and applications across the E&P lifecycle. The PetroData center manages more than 50TB of data for the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate and the DISKOS consortium of 16 multi-national E&P companies operating in the North Sea. Customer data are kept on deposit in a sophisticated data management system, enabling account holders to access their E&P applications and data 24x365. Unique entitlement technology and system security protect the data from unauthorized access, yet provide concurrent access to joint account holders, thus reducing the cost of redundant storage for multi-company projects.
"We highly value the opportunity to combine Landmark's world-class data management services with IBM's optimized Linux solutions, including workstations, servers and storage," said Eric Leon, IBM's general manager, global chemical and petroleum industry. "IBM is investing more than one billion dollars in Linux this year and is working closely with Landmark to help deploy its applications to the Linux platform. As part of this effort, we consider the E&P industry in Norway an ideal candidate for a Technical Center of Excellence because Linux provides unsurpassed ability to better manage the high-performance computing requirements of seismic processing, reservoir simulation and storage of large volumes of data -- all of which will provide long-term benefits for E&P customers."
Linux runs on a spectrum of computing platforms, primarily Intel-based systems and is highly regarded around the world for its unprecedented performance and appealing price points. Major companies in almost every industry are deploying it for mission critical applications.
"Intel is committed to the evolving information technology infrastructure of the E&P industry and is pleased to support Landmark in this very strategic initiative," said John Davies, vice president e-Business Solutions, Intel Corporation. "Our strategy is to combine Intel's technology leadership with Landmark's innovative applications to meet the unique IT requirements of the Norwegian energy sector. Norway is the third largest exporter of hydrocarbons in the world and has a proven track record of rapid adoption of innovative solutions that will dramatically impact their success in the marketplace."
