HALLIBURTON DEVELOPS SOLUTION TO CONTROLLING
LOST CIRCULATION DURING DRILLING OPERATIONS
HOUSTON, Texas - Baroid, a product service line of Halliburton Energy Services, has developed a lost circulation plug called HYDRO-PLUG™ to assist operators with curtailing fluid losses. Halliburton Energy Services is a business unit of Halliburton (NYSE: HAL).
"Severe losses can disrupt drilling operations for days," said Craig Floyd, senior vice president, Baroid product service line, Halliburton Energy Services. "Until now there wasn't a consistently effective cure for sealing off rigorous lost circulation zones. We have had some successes that indicate the HYDRO-PLUG technology solves that problem."
The lost circulation pill, which is ideal for use in deepwater operations with synthetic fluids, uses a hydrating crystallized polymer blend. It acts quickly to seal off zones in just a few hours, allowing the operator to return to normal drilling activities. No special equipment is necessary to place the pill, just the rig pumps. In addition, the product has a built-in spacer.
Recently, HYDRO-PLUG lost circulation material was used to seal off losses in a shelf well in the Gulf of Mexico. While attempting to pull casing on a slot recovery operation, the driller began experiencing total loss of circulation at 500 feet measure depth and true vertical depth. Conventional lost circulation pills were used with no success. Then HYDRO-PLUG technology was used and in a couple of hours, the fluid level was maintained and monitored at the 85-feet mark. The operator was able to continue his procedure without any further fluid loss.
On another project in the Gulf of Mexico, an operator lost 320 barrels of oil based fluid while drilling the last 50-feet of the sandstone at 9,854 feet at liner point. To resolve the problem, Halliburton pumped HYDRO-PLUG lost circulation material, followed by ENVIROMUL drilling fluid into the well, curing it and enabling the operator to drill the other 23 feet to liner point. After an additional 25 barrels of fluid were lost while running the liner, Halliburton pumped another 25 barrels of HYDRO-PLUG lost circulation material ahead of the cement, resulting in no further fluid losses. The ability to mix and pump HYDRO-PLUG lost circulation material in record time, saved the operator approximately eight to 12 hours of non-productive rig time and stopped the fluid loss.
