FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 09, 2001
World's Largest Airport People Mover System Under Construction
HOUSTON, Texas - Halliburton KBR is working rapidly to complete architectural and engineering design, design management, construction administration and quality assurance for an $846 million Automated People Mover (APM) system at Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport in Texas. When completed in 2005 to meet an accelerated schedule, the APM system will be the largest airport people mover system ever built, and will fulfill DFW's goal of speedier passenger connection times. Halliburton KBR is the engineering and construction segment of Halliburton (NYSE: HAL).
The APM will move passengers in about nine minutes from one end of the airport to the other, and because it will run on the secured airside face of the airport, it will streamline passenger security procedures. In light of increased security measures, this will be a welcome improvement for DFW passengers. The new APM replaces the existing 30-year old Airport Train System that is at capacity.
The APM will consist of a 4.81-mile dual-lane guideway, elevated 50-70 feet above ground, and will connect Terminals A, B, C and E, the international Terminal D under-construction, and the future Terminal F. DFW Airport handles more than 60 million passengers annually and is the United States' fifth busiest airport in passenger travel, third in operations. Industry forecasts estimate the number of passengers will increase to 100 million by 2025.
Halliburton KBR is orchestrating the project in a way that minimizes disruption to the 683 daily flights out of 132 gates, and at the same time meets the ambitious project schedule. By putting precast columns on the active airside apron, the design team reduced by two-thirds the time required to erect
more than 250 airside columns supporting the guideway - each 50-foot-tall column can be completely erected in two days without closing a gate or impacting gate operations. In addition, Halliburton KBR is meeting the demanding 23-month design and overlapping 38-month construction schedule by working two shifts of a large staff assembled from Halliburton KBR and 16 sub-consultant firms. Most of the project team is co-located with DFW staff in a project office on the DFW campus.
