FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 19, 2001
Seven companies commit to develop PlantData XML standards for the Process Industries and to utilize ePlantData software
HOUSTON, Texas - Seven companies, including leading process industry software vendors and end-user companies, started work on February 27, 2001 to define and deploy practical XML standards for the international process industry. The seven companies driving this effort are Chemstations Inc., COADE Inc., ePlantData, Inc., HTRI, Kellogg Brown & Root, IFP's Industrial Division, and WaveOne.com, Inc. The PlantData XML standards are initially focused on describing process materials and the design, specification and procurement of shell and tube heat exchanger equipment. PlantData XML standards are envisioned to eventually include the full range of process plant information and process equipment.
The PlantData XML standards will be published and freely available from the www.ePlantData.com website. ePlantData software is a value-added software component and end-user electronic data sheet that reduces the cost of using the PlantData XML standard for process industry software owners and end-users. The first commercial software implementations that use the PlantData XML standards and ePlantData software are planned for release before the end of 2001.
The much needed XML standard offers a key enabling technology for process industry companies to (1) electronically exchange technical data among many different software applications using a vendor-neutral format, (2) archive technical data in vendor-neutral formats, and (3) allow intelligent B2B e-commerce transactions over the Internet.
Tom Teague, President of ePlantData, Inc. states, "Our goal in developing the PlantData XML standards and ePlantData software is to unlock the value in the previously developed ISO STEP standards, by making software implementations of these standards practical and affordable for process industry companies to use. I am extremely pleased with the strong support shown by these forward-looking, customer-focused companies. These companies will provide tremendous value to their customers through deployment of standards-based electronic data exchange in their commercial products and services. I encourage all interested parties to visit the www.ePlantData.com website to learn how to get involved."
Randy Harl, President and Chief Executive Officer for Kellogg Brown & Root, the world's leading technology-based engineering, procurement, construction and maintenance contractor, states, "KBR has actively supported industry standards for heat exchanger equipment in PIP, API and ISO, as well as pdXi/STEP standard for process data exchange. In today'’s work process, we have several opportunities to reduce work hours by eliminating time spent transferring and checking data from one design program to another and one data sheet format to another. Even with industry design standards, our clients and our suppliers frequently use different data sheet formats for describing the same information and our work process is still largely paper-based and labor-intensive. The PlantData XML and ePlantData software will enable us to eliminate engineering hours spent manually transferring data. Since all of the companies involved in the design and procurement process can benefit from this neutral file format, we can shorten design schedules, while maintaining or improving design quality by automating the data transfer process."
Nathan Massey, President of Chemstations, Inc., a leading global provider of process simulation software to over 1000 customer companies in the process industry, states, "At Chemstations, we have long viewed software integration as a critical need for our users. We now offer one of the most tightly integrated, easy to use suites of process engineering software tools available in the industry. We believe that our customers need and deserve open industry standards for integrating our software with other software packages that they use. These standards will enable them to select the best-of-breed technologies for each application and easily migrate the information. The process industry has been trying to solve the standards software integration problem through various efforts for over 20 years. Now, enabled by the powerful XML technology, and leveraging the results of previous standards efforts, the PlantData XML and ePlantData software effort is the most promising approach we've seen to help the industry finally achieve a practical solution to this long-standing problem."
Tom Van Laan, President of COADE, Inc., a leading supplier of piping and process vessel mechanical design software for hundreds of process industry companies, states "Software integration, and having standards to do so, has been a top priority at COADE since our start back in the 1980's. We joined this current effort because we want our vessel design software, PVElite, to integrate readily with the thermal heat exchanger design software in a round-trip fashion. This will benefit our users by allowing them to more rapidly design the mechanical details of vessel shells and heat exchanger tube sheets in tandem with the heat exchanger thermal design and exchanger configuration. Also, users can verify and re-rate equipment thermal performance based on changes in the detailed mechanical design as needed. Our involvement in developing PlantData XML standards in conjunction with ePlantData software provides us with an enabling technology, built on process industry standards, to build these interfaces quickly and easily to the benefit of our users."
Stan Kistler, Director of Software Development for Heat Transfer Research, Inc. (HTRI), the industry-leading provider of heat exchanger thermal design software backed by almost 40 years of proprietary data taken on industrial-sized heat transfer equipment at HTRI's experimental facility, states, "We have a large user base of several hundred owner-operators, EPC companies, and heat exchanger manufacturers, many of whom use different software packages in conjunction with HTRI heat exchanger thermal design software. Our goal is to work with the other software packages that our clients use to streamline the work process and improve productivity. We view the PlantData XML and ePlantData software as the best means to unlock the value from our investment in standards by rapidly and cost effectively deploying the needed software implementations based on XML."
Yves Charlez is Computer Aided Engineering Manager, Standards and Methods, in IFP's Industrial Division, which is an integrated technology provider to the hydrocarbon processing industries. Charlez states, "Our principal objective is to increase the value of our services to our customers. By providing process design packages in improved electronic format, a more rapid utilization of the technical data in our process packages will be possible, thereby enhancing performance for our customers and for the detailed engineering contractors which work in collaboration with us. PlantData XML and ePlantData software provide a practical means of achieving a standards-based approach to meet this objective."
John Dial, President of WaveOne.com, a process engineering Application Services Provider, states "The development of PlantData XML and deployment of ePlantData software with integrated links to the www.waveone.com data management and collaborative tools will provide a much needed and valuable tool to end-users in the process industries."
