HALLIBURTON INTRODUCES NEW LOW VISCOSITY ESTER-BASED FLUID SPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR DEEPWATER CONDITIONS

DALLAS, Texas - Halliburton Energy Services recently commercialized its low viscosity ester-based PETROFREE™ LV fluid with the addition of two new rheological control agents, completing successful jobs for an operator in the Gulf of Mexico. Offering an alternative to current synthetic-based fluids, led by the less biodegradable internal olefin, the new drilling fluid provides operators with the ability to use ester-based fluids in deep and ultra-deep water conditions while still providing best-in-class environmental performance. Halliburton Energy Services is a business unit of Halliburton Company (NYSE: HAL).

"For years, the industry, as well as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has recognized the environmental advantages that ester-based fluids can bring to oil and gas operations," said Jody Powers, president, Halliburton Energy Services. "The introduction of the PETROFREE LV system further displays Halliburton’s strategy and commitment to offering materials with lower environmental impacts, without compromising technical capabilities."

In order to combat the lower and higher temperature ranges typically seen in deepwater situations, Baroid Drilling Fluids, the industry leader in Total Fluids Management™ and a product service line of Halliburton Energy Services, specially formulated two new thinners, COLDTROL™ and ATC™, to work in conjunction with ester-based fluids, specifically the PETROFREE LV system. Designed to help reduce rheological properties in cold environments, the COLDTROL additive can thin in the 40°F and lower temperature range without adversely affecting the higher temperature rheology. The ATC additive can help to universally reduce rheologies in all temperature environments quickly. Particularly useful when lowering the yield point and gel strengths before running casing, the ATC additive can maintain properties during the drilling phase as well.

The PETROFREE LV base-fluid takes advantage of a sustainable source for one of its components – a significant part of the fluid’s chemistry is obtained from renewable palm or coconut oil.

"Operators wanting to minimize their environmental impact now have a choice to use a fluid that, even in its manufacture, minimizes the demands upon our environment," added Powers.
