HALLIBURTON PROVIDES THE INDUSTRY WITH A NEW SONIC MEASUREMENT ALTERNATIVE AND ACOUSTIC SOLUTIONS STRATEGY
DALLAS, Texas - Halliburton Energy Services reinforced its commitment to providing the industry with high-quality acoustic reservoir measurement choices in deep and ultra-deep water with the introduction of the WaveSonic wireline tool and the 4 ¾-in. Bi-modal AcousTic (BAT) logging-while-drilling (LWD) sonic tool. Both the third generation crossed dipole wireline tool and the LWD dipole sonic tool provide compressional and shear measurements in fast and slow formations, offering a two-alternative, one-solution concept that gives operators critical wellbore evaluation answers from spud to total depth of the well. Halliburton Energy Services is a business unit of Halliburton Company (NYSE: HAL).
"By providing sonic solutions, regardless of formation conditions, with either the LWD or electric line tools," said Jody Powers, president, Halliburton Energy Services, "we have once again raised the acoustic measurement standard in the oil and gas industry. The ability to obtain real-time data, such as pore pressure, seismic time-depth correlation, and bit wear predictions from the BAT LWD sonic tool and shear wave anisotropy measurements from the WaveSonic wireline tool, gives operators another complete reservoir solution."
Halliburton's logging and perforating product service line's WaveSonic tool offers simultaneous monopole and crossed dipole measurements that can be used to determine the orientation of minimum and maximum principle stresses in conditions ranging from poorly consolidated, high-porosity sandstones to low porosity carbonates. This information can enhance 3-D stimulation design of both low-permeability fracture stimulation and sand control FracPac stimulation treatments, as well as give borehole stress data for geo-mechanical and borehole stability analysis.
The state-of-the-art dipole source technology and waveform processing methods used in the WaveSonic tool allow for the determination of acoustic anisotropy, which is used to enhance the geophysical 3-D seismic interpretation, as well as amplitude-versus-offset (AVO) analysis, by providing fast and slow shear wave travel times and their orientations. The WaveSonic tool’s mechanically robust design allows for drillpipe conveyed logging in high-angle or horizontal wells and is combinable with Halliburton’s openhole wireline tools, including the MRIL-Prime and Reservoir Description Tool (RDT) tools.
The BAT LWD sonic tool, through Halliburton's Sperry-Sun Drilling Services' product service line, supplies many of the same openhole evaluation benefits as the WaveSonic tool, including the ability to provide compressional and shear slowness logs in both fast and slow formations. The dual-transmitter, dual-frequency, and dual-receiver-array configuration provides ultra-reliable measurement redundancy in various petrophysical, drilling, and geophysical applications. The new 4 ¾-in. BAT tool design complements the existing 6 ¾-in. and 8-in. BAT tools, completing the top-to-bottom Halliburton acoustic solution.
