SPERRY-SUN DRILLING SERVICES COMPLETES RECORD 275TH MULTILATERAL INSTALLATION
DALLAS, Texas - Sperry-Sun Drilling Services, a product service line of Halliburton Energy Services, Inc., recently achieved yet another milestone with the installation of its 275th multilateral junction. The TAML (Technology Advancement for Multilaterals) level 4 tri-lateral was successfully completed onshore in eastern Venezuela. Halliburton Energy Services, Inc. is a business unit of Halliburton Company (NYSE: HAL).
In response to the operator's need to improve exploitation in its Venezuelan field, Sperry-Sun recommended utilizing its multilateral well technology, particularly the RMLS Retrievable Multilateral System. Multilateral drilling and completions systems have consistently been identified as a means of increasing oil production from the heavy oil field by facilitating the placement of two or more horizontal wellbores into the A, B, and C producing formations from one surface location. To date, 24 junctions have been completed on 13 of the operator's wells (nine tri-lateral and four dual-lateral) using the RMLS system.
"This milestone is yet another example of how the Halliburton Energy Services and Sperry-Sun Drilling Services combination continues to yield positive results and is able to provide the industry with a start-to-finish approach to multilateral well design, construction, and completion," said Jody Powers, president, Halliburton Energy Services. "Halliburton's dedication and ability to offer its customers technologically advanced multilateral solutions will continue to strengthen our leadership position in the marketplace."
For the 275th installation, two pre-milled RMLS windows were installed in the primary 9 5/8-in. casing string, allowing two 8 1/2-in. laterals to be drilled, in addition to the mainbore. Junction stability was achieved with the casing and cementing of both the mainbore and the laterals, thereby minimizing sand influx at the junction and the risk of a lateral loss. The level 4 junction should provide the best quality multilateral, remaining fully accessible and serviceable for the life of the well. Sperry-Sun's participation in the operator's development project commenced in early 2000, with a commitment to trial five 9 5/8-in. Sperry-Sun RMLS windows, the success of which led to the sale of more than 50 systems by the end of that same year.
Founded in 1930, Sperry-Sun Drilling Services is the world leader in multilateral technology with more than 280 installations worldwide and continues to lead the market in drilling, technology, and reservoir deliverability.
