FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 19, 2001
FIRST HALLIBURTON H2ZERO CONFORMANCE SOLUTION JOB PERFORMED FOR A PRODUCING WELL IN EGYPT
DALLAS, Texas - Halliburton's (NYSE: HAL) Energy Services Group successfully completed its first H2Zero conformance solution application on a producing well in the Gulf of Suez in Egypt, shutting off more than 3,000 barrels of water production, per day, from two zones. The two zones are located in the middle of 10 perforated zones in a Morgan Field well operated by Gupco (a joint venture between Egyptian General Petroleum Company (EGPC) and BP). Incremental production of more than 680 barrels of oil per day is being realized from the upper four zones while the incremental reserve increase from this production is 1.5 million barrels.
"We are very excited about the continued success of the H2Zero conformance solution," said Edgar Ortiz, president and chief executive officer, Halliburton's Energy Services Group. "Halliburton's ability to combine its conformance solutions with reservoir understanding and innovative placement techniques will help operators increase the economical life of their reservoirs."
Prior to the treatment at the Egypt well, diagnostic tests and reservoir analysis were conducted to develop a full understanding of the issue. The Morgan Field well had a total of 10 perforated zones. The top three zones had no fluid production, the next four produced 100 percent water, the eighth zone had no production, and the bottom two were oil producers. The decision was made to isolate the fifth and sixth zones for treatment, which together were producing in excess of 3,000 barrels of water per day. Prior to the application of the H2Zero solution, coiled tubing was employed to set a sand plug across the bottom four zones and an inflatable plug was used to isolate the top four zones.
Post-job production logging analysis shows 100 percent success, with water being completely shut-off on the two zones treated with Halliburton's H2Zero conformance solution. To date, neither zone five nor six are producing water. As of this writing, the sand plug has not yet been removed from the lower zones but production from these zones is expected to be in the same range as prior to the treatment.
"Unwanted water production and disposal is a huge problem in Egypt, with most wells producing more water than oil. The ability to control unwanted water insitu can mean the difference between an economic well and a plugged one," added Ahmed Lotfy, division vice president, Halliburton's Energy Services Group in Egypt.
Originally developed for the North Sea, the H2Zero solution is an environmentally sensitive polymer system that provides exceptional capabilities for controlling unwanted water and gas production. It has performed consistently at higher temperature ranges, up to 320°F.
