HALLIBURTON ENERGY SERVICES AWARDED WYOMING’S RECLAMATION AWARD

DALLAS, Texas - Halliburton Energy Services, through its Bentonite Performance Minerals (BPM) product service line, recently received Wyoming's second highest honor given to a company mining non-coal minerals. The state's Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Wyoming Land Quality Division presented BPM with the 2001 Wyoming Honorable Mention in Surface Non-coal Mining Reclamation Award for its long-term commitment to leaving the land more productive than it was before mining began. The company, who has reclaimed more than 2,100 acres at the Colony Mine since 1969, also received accolades from Wyoming's DEQ in 1999 and 2000 when it was awarded the Excellence in Surface Non-coal Mining Reclamation Award. Halliburton Energy Services is a business unit of Halliburton Company (NYSE: HAL).

"Halliburton and Bentonite Performance Minerals are extremely pleased to be honored by the state of Wyoming for our environmental achievements," said Jody Powers, president, Halliburton Energy Services. "We continue to dedicate ourselves to the task of restoring lands, from which we have mined for bentonite, back to their original state."

Accomplished using pre-mining engineering, hydrology restoration, replacement of topsoil, and re-establishment of vegetation, reclamation is the restoration of the land after mining is complete. Because bentonite mining exacts a heavy toll on the land, BPM has worked with the state to reclaim land disturbed by strip mining operations since 1967, two years prior to the passage of Wyoming’s first reclamation laws in 1969.

"The employees who work at the Halliburton BPM mine are very proud of their achievements," said Don Dahlgren, environmental manager, Halliburton’s Bentonite Performance Minerals. "The fact that most of our employees grew up on this land, and know how important it is to not only put the land back the way it was found but also make it productive and stable, motivates them on a daily basis."

Criteria to be considered for the Wyoming reclamation award includes the amount and quality of reclaimed land, the company's on-site effectiveness, and the difficulty of achieving reclamation under existing conditions. Also reviewed by the DEQ are a company's long-term benefits to the community, the transferability of a company’s technique or practice, exceeding the spirit and intent of the Wyoming Environmental Quality Act (EQA), and an increase in the public awareness for the EQA.

Located in the northeast corner of Wyoming approximately 40 miles from Devil's Tower National Monument, BPM is a leader in the mining of the unique industrial mineral bentonite. Operating at capacity around the clock, the plant produces approximately 450,000 tons of bentonite per year, which are extracted from clay deposits. Of that 450,000 tons, nearly twenty percent is exported worldwide. As well as being the main ingredient in drilling muds, bentonite is used in more than 1,000 different applications including iron ore pellets, face cream, paint, kitty litter, environmental remediation, and automotive and other cast metal products.
