HALLIBURTON AND GD ENGINEERING PROVIDE OFFSHORE INDUSTRY WITH NEW SUBSEA PIG LAUNCHER

DALLAS, Texas - Halliburton Subsea has teamed up with GD Engineering, a United Kingdom-based pipeline pigging system specialist, to offer the offshore industry a new Subsea Pig Launcher (SPL) for use in deepwater applications. The alliance provides oil and gas field operators with the design, fabrication, installation, and servicing of the SPL. The new system, capable of operating at a design pressure of 10,000 psig (689 bars) in up to 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) of water, is ready for field application and can provide a cost-effective solution to flow assurance problems in long subsea tiebacks. Halliburton Subsea is a business unit of Halliburton Company's (NYSE: HAL) Energy Services Group.

The conventional method of connecting satellite fields to host facilities, via dual flowlines, allows round-trip pigging operations to clean the lines. The Halliburton/GD Engineering offering has the ability to enable operators to use a single flowline for tieback, resulting in considerable field development cost savings.

"Grown out of the successful Halliburton/GD Engineering alliance, which was formed to design and build the world's first – and currently the only – operational SPL in the North Sea, the new subsea pig launcher is capable of pigging flowlines without interrupting production," said Edgar Ortiz, president and chief executive officer of Halliburton's Energy Services Group.

The SPL holds 10 to 12 conventional pigs and uses a proven, remotely operated hydraulic pig delivery system from the service umbilical to ensure that positive control of pig displacement and release is achieved. The system overcomes problems commonly associated with "pig hang-up" in more conventional gravity feed systems, a development that allows the new SPL to be installed in both vertical and horizontal orientations. The reloading of pigs is carried out from a standard remotely operated vehicle (ROV) support vessel. Only the initial SPL installation and launcher barrel recovery requires the use of a multi-service vessel (MSV).

To avoid the release of hydrocarbons or methanol, environmentally friendly hydraulic fluid is used to launch the pigs into the flowline. Since at no time can hydrocarbons or methanol enter the retrievable section of the SPL, a truly "green" solution is provided. This also allows the pigs to be left in the launcher barrel on the seabed for a long period without any degradation.
