KELLOGG BROWN & ROOT’S GREENS BAYOU FAB YARD RECEIVES $27 MILLION CONTRACT TO FABRICATE PILINGS FOR WOODROW WILSON BRIDGE NEAR NATION’S CAPITAL
HOUSTON, Texas - Kellogg Brown & Root, Inc., a business unit of Halliburton Company (NYSE: HAL), has been awarded a contract valued at $27 million to provide fabricated steel pilings as part of a project to replace the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. The project, located just outside Washington D. C., carries Interstate I-95 and I-495 (Capitol Beltway) across the Potomac River between Maryland and Virginia.
Fabrication of the steel piles will begin May 2001 approximately 30,000 tons and will necessitate the rolling of 75,832 feet (14.36 miles) of pipe. at the Greens Bayou Fabrication Yard in Houston and are scheduled for completion in May 2002. The GBFY Pipe Mill will roll the 54-inch, 66-inch and 72-inch diameters cans from 1-inch, 1.25-inch and 1.50-inch thick steel plate and then fabricate into an average length of 200-foot pile sections. The aggregate weight of the piles is approximately 30,000 tons and will necessitate the rolling of 75,832 feet (14.36 miles) of pipe.
Commenting on the award, Kellogg Brown & Root President Randy Harl said, "We are very pleased to be a part of this major endeavor to replace the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. In fact, the project is more than a bridge replacement, it involves a seven and half mile reconstruction of corridors and approaches over the one mile long Potomac River crossing and will enhance traffic mobility throughout the area."
The Greens Bayou Fabrication Yard is a 180-acre facility located on the Houston Ship Channel, east of downtown Houston. Established in the early 1940s, GBFY was there at the beginning of the offshore industry, fabricating the first structures for the Gulf of Mexico and other parts of the globe. Today, deepwater offshore drilling and production topsides, sub-sea templates, deck sections, process piping and various modular prefabricated structures are all representative of marine construction that has been accomplished at GBFY.
