FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 23, 2000
OSHA PRESENTS SAFETY AWARDS TO THREE HALLIBURTON SITES
-Halliburton site holds injury rates to 50 percent below the national average.-
HOUSTON, Texas - The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) has presented safety awards to three manufacturing plants of Halliburton Energy Services, a business unit of Halliburton Company (NYSE: HAL).
HES manufacturing plants in Carrollton and Alvarado, Texas, and Duncan, Oklahoma received awards for having exemplary safety programs and work areas. All three of the plants are part of OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program (VPP).
"This is an impressive achievement," said Edgar Ortiz, president, Halliburton Energy Services. "I am very proud of everyone who was involved in this accomplishment as it demonstrates our commitment to the safety and health of our employees."
The VPP program, designed to recognize and promote effective safety and health management, establishes a cooperative relationship among management, labor, and OSHA. Management agrees to operate an effective program that meets OSHA's established set of criteria. Employees agree to participate in the program and work with management to assure a safe and healthful workplace. OSHA initially verifies that the program meets the VPP criteria, then publicly recognizes the site's exemplary program and removes it from routine scheduled inspection lists. However, OSHA reassesses the site periodically to confirm that it continues to meet the VPP criteria.
The Alvarado plant was presented the Super Star Among Stars award, and the Carrollton and Duncan plants were presented the Star Among Stars (SAS) award. The SAS program was established to recognize VPP participants-- within OSHA's Region IV-who have kept injury incidence rates and lost workday injuries well below the Bureau of Labor and Statistics national average. The Alvarado plant was able to keep injury incidence rates and lost workdays 75 percent below the national average, while the other two plants were 50 percent below the national average. OSHA believes that by recognizing companies with injury rates well below the national average, it focuses attention on reducing injuries.
The Carrollton plant has been a part of OSHA's VPP program for 16 years; Duncan, for 13 years; and Alvarado, two years.
