SPERRY-SUN CELEBRATES 70 YEARS AS A GLOBAL LEADER IN THE OILFIELD SERVICES INDUSTRY
HOUSTON, Texas - After seven decades of servicing the oilfield industry, Sperry-Sun Drilling Services, a division of Halliburton Energy Services, Inc., continues to lead the market in drilling technology and reservoir deliverability. Facing the next millennium with more than 2,500 employees located in more than 50 offices and 30 countries, Sperry-Sun meets customer needs with human and technological expertise covering the gamut from the latest formation evaluation and multilateral drilling technology to computer rigsite information management systems. Halliburton Energy Services is a business unit of Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL).
"For 70 years, Sperry-Sun has been committed to delivering high-quality drilling and geological services in a safe, environmentally responsible and socially acceptable manner, making it a leader in its field," said Edgar Ortiz, president, Halliburton Energy Services.
Sperry-Sun was founded in 1930 in what might be considered one of the earliest operator/service provider partnerships. The company was born of the cooperative efforts of J. N. Pew, Jr., a member of Sun Oil Company's founding family, and Elmer Ambrose Sperry, one of America's greatest inventors. The result of the union was SURWEL®, the industry's first gyroscopic surveying unit, and a new company - Sperry-Sun.
During the 1940s, Sperry-Sun expanded its product line to include singleshots, multishots, sidewall coring devices, mud logging units and deflection tools - and methods for orienting them. Over the next 30 years, the company expanded its surveying services from oil and gas wells to the potash mining industry, which became a mainstay of the business for many years. High-accuracy instruments and round-the-clock employee availability set them apart from their competitors, earning the company contracts with the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission's Nevada test site.
To meet growing oil and gas industry expectations during the 1980s, Sperry-Sun expanded and introduced innovative technologies in directional and horizontal drilling - and in measurement while drilling (MWD) - broadening its operations into key strategic locations and markets throughout the world. It was during this period of growth and change that the formation evaluation MWD service was introduced, a revolutionary concept that allowed Sperry-Sun to provide measurement to the industry not previously available while drilling.
The 1990s saw an increase in new drilling technologies and techniques with Sperry-Sun at the forefront accomplishing such advanced drilling applications as horizontal, multilateral, underbalanced, short-radius, and extended-reach drilling. Today, the work that J. N. Pew, Jr. and Elmer Ambrose Sperry originated - developing innovative tools that incorporate sophisticated downhole sensing devices and data acquisition and analysis - helps oil and gas companies reach their targets faster and more accurately, with increased cost-effectiveness.
"Since 1930, we have provided our customers with integrated service packages on the cutting edge of planning, executing and analyzing drilling projects. Likewise, our commitment to partnering with customers is as old as the company itself. We look forward to another 70 successful years," said Sperry-Sun Division Vice President of Operations, John Mahar.
Houston-based Sperry-Sun has two other major technological hubs in Cheltenham, England and in Nisku, Canada. Working in environments as diverse as the Alaskan North Slope, the Middle East, the Gulf of Mexico, the North Sea, offshore Nigeria, the Gulf of Thailand and offshore Australia has given the company the opportunity to rise to record-breaking challenges.
