SPERRY-SUN INTRODUCES GEO-PILOT™ ROTARY STEERABLE SYSTEM
HOUSTON, Texas - Sperry-Sun Drilling Services, a division of Halliburton Energy Services (HES), recently commercialized its new Geo-Pilot™ rotary steerable system. The system consists of the Geo-Pilot rotary steerable tool, designed in collaboration with Japan National Oil Corporation (JNOC), Sperry-Sun's logging-while-drilling (LWD) system, specially designed long-gauge bits from Security DBS, and the INSITE™ data acquisition and management system. The Geo-Pilot rotary steerable tool, the first true point-the-bit rotary steerable tool, operates by deflecting a rotating driveshaft off center, causing the driveshaft to flex and by creating an equal and opposite deflection on the output side (bit side) of the lower bearing. To date, the system has undergone field trials at the Gas Research Institute's research facility near Catoosa, Oklahoma, and has been run commercially for operators in Norway, Canada, Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico.
One recent commercial run was completed for Spirit Energy in the Gulf of Mexico. With the Geo-Pilot system, a total of 5,627 feet were drilled on two runs of 4,507 feet and of 1,120 feet. The challenging well plan called for a shallow kickoff, building to 33 degrees inclination at a rate of 2.5 degrees/100 feet, holding angle for 1,200 feet, and then dropping to near vertical and kicking off, building 55 degrees, and turning 182 degrees to complete the section.
The difficult well path was followed with great precision and showed significant decreases on downhole torque and drag values compared with expectations based on similar wells. No extra circulation time was required for hole cleaning. The Geo-Pilot system is designed to drill a higher quality
wellbore and to minimize hole spiraling, thus eliminating traps along the bottom of the hole where cuttings can accumulate. The use of long-gauge bits from Security DBS, a division of HES, made possible by the Geo-Pilot's point-the-bit concept, also greatly affects the quality of the wellbore. The extra stabilization provided by the long gauge keeps the bit centered, reducing side cutting action so that the majority of the energy is directed at the rock immediately in front of the bit, improving efficiency and making for a straighter hole. This also reduces downhole vibration levels, which leads to longer bit life and increased LWD reliability.
