Kellogg Brown & Root, Technip Will Build Petrochemicals Plant In Qatar
DALLAS, Texas - Brown & Root International , a subsidiary of Kellogg Brown & Root, with TECHNIP, have been selected by Q-Chem to design and build a grassroots petrochemicals plant in Qatar. The plant will be built in Mesaieed and is scheduled for completion in mid-2002. Kellogg Brown & Root is a business unit of Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL).
Q-Chem is a joint venture of Qatar General Petroleum Corporation(QGPC) and Phillips Investment Company, a subsidiary of Phillips Petroleum Company.
The project involves the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of a 500,000 ton-a-year ethylene cracker, a two-train polyethylene plant capable of producing over 450,000 tons-a-year of high- and/or low-density polyethylene, a 47,000 ton-a-year hexene-1 unit, and associated utilities and offsite facilities. Kellogg Brown & Root will supply the ethylene technology, and Phillips will provide the proprietary technology for the hexene-1 and polyethylene units.
The Q-Chem facility will receive its ethane feedstock from the NGL-4 plant, which is currently being tendered by QGPC.
A formal EPC contract award is expected to be executed in September upon Q-Chem's receipt of requisite approvals for the project from its Board.
Engineering work will be completed jointly by Kellogg Brown & Root and TECHNIP in Houston and Paris, and construction activity is scheduled to begin late this year. Staffing is expected to peak at approximately 3,000 personnel about mid-2001.
