Offshore Abu Dhabi Multi-Lateral Well Yields Production Beyond Expectations

DALLAS, Texas (July 28, 1999) —Sperry Sun, a division of Halliburton Energy Services (HES), in conjunction with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Japan Oil Development Company (JODCO), and Japan National Oil Corporation Technology Research Center (JNOC-TRC), successfully completed a multi-lateral well with a level-5 Technology Assessment Multi-Laterals (TAML) completion utilizing level-4 TAML hydraulic isolation. Halliburton Energy Services is a business unit of the Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL).

"The joint venture of JODCO, JNOC-TRC, and Halliburton's Sperry-Sun has aggressively developed and implemented cutting-edge re-entry milling technology that allowed the addition of a lateral with selective intervention, isolation, and flow control," said Dave Lesar, president and chief operating officer. "By separately stimulating the desired lateral intervals has resulted in initial production rates two to five times that of a conventionally completed well."

The lateral junction was created in 9 5/8-inch casing on an existing offshore well. Production tubing was run into each bore and dually completed to surface. The re-entry well was drilled offshore Abu Dhabi for the Zakum Development Company (ZADCO), jointly owned by the ADNOC and JODCO. The well was drilled and completed under the auspices of ZADCO and the Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO), whose involvement was instrumental in the project's ultimate success.

Five primary objectives were identified as requirements for a successful job:
   1.  Re-establish water-free oil production by locating a horizontal lateral in an optimum position in the reservoir.
   2.  Utilize an existing wellbore to conserve platform slots.
   3.  Establish the ability to effectively stimulate and monitor each reservoir through the final completion.
   4.  Ensure the selective production and re-entry capability of each lateral through the final completion.
   5.  Provide the opportunity for selective water shut off in each lateral, if required.

The JODCO and JNOC-TRC designed the innovative multi-lateral well application as a first step in evaluating methods to increase recovery from ZADCO's offshore reserves. To achieve the design requirements, Sperry-Sun used several of its advanced multi-lateral technologies - RDS™ (re-entry drilling system), RMLS™ (retrievable multi-lateral system), and MSCS® (multi-string completion system) incorporating a dual bore deflector - as well as its directional drilling and measurement-while-drilling/logging-while-drilling services.
