FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 21, 1999
Halliburton Energy Services' Alaska Facilities Earn Green Star Award
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (July 21, 1999) - Halliburton Energy Services, a business unit of Halliburton Company (NYSE: HAL), was awarded Green Star certification for four of its facilities at an Anchorage Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Green Star, a non-profit organization that promotes environmental awareness and cooperation throughout Alaska and other states, awarded the certification to HES.
"Achieving a Green Star takes a concerted effort and commitment among management and employees to adopt a new way of thinking when it comes to daily operations," said Stephanie Spafford, the Arctic Chapter Green Star Coordinator who performed the assessments. "Halliburton's facilities in Anchorage, its camp facilities in Deadhorse, and its Baroid and Sperry-Sun oilfield operations in Prudhoe Bay have more than successfully met the standards required to earn a Green Star." (Subsequently, all remaining HES facilities in Alaska completed Green Star certification - Sterling, Kenai, Fairbanks and Kuparuk.)
"It is unusual for one company to have so many of its facilities earn Green Star awards at one time," Spafford continued, "but Halliburton's Alaska operations have been able to take advantage of the company's global environmental initiatives, established Health, Safety and Environment programs and corporate commitment to environmental excellence."
The steps to attaining Green Star certification for an industrial site include an initial assessment, an obligation to fulfill at least 12 of 18 environmental standards with a written report of compliance, employee training, awareness of Green Star standards, and a summary environmental assessment.
"This is a major milestone in our quest for statewide IS0 14001 certification in Alaska by early 2000," said Edgar Ortiz, president, Halliburton Energy Services. "Green Star statewide certification is the first step in the process."
HES, one of the world's largest energy services company, provides cementing, completion products, slickline, proplok services, nitrogen, tools and surface testing, tubing conveyed perforating, Baroid mud services and Sperry-Sun drilling services in its Alaska facilities.
Halliburton Company, founded in 1919, is the world's leading energy services, engineering, construction, maintenance, and energy equipment company. Combined revenues totaled $17 billion in 1998.
