BAROID HELPS SET EXTENDED REACH DRILLING RECORDS

DALLAS, Texas (May 18, 1999) - Baroid, a division of Halliburton Energy Services, was instrumental in helping to set two new world records for extended reach drilling (ERD). With the help of Baroid products, the Cuenca Austral consortium, operated by TOTAL AUSTRAL, recently set world records for total drilled length and horizontal departure in its Cullen Norte 1 well in Argentina. Halliburton Energy Services is a business unit of the Halliburton Company (NYSE: HAL)

The total drilled length of the well, located in the Cuenca Marine Austral offshore permit area near Tierra del Fuego, is 11,184 meters (36,693 feet or 7 miles). The horizontal departure is 10,585 meters (34,728 feet or 6.6 miles). True vertical depth of the well is 1,657 meters (5,436 feet or 1 mile)

The Argentine Baroid team assisted with the engineering, operation and maintenance of drilling fluids on the project. Prior to operation start-up, the team performed extensive testing of fluids at the request of the operator. The fluid that was used in the record well made use of Barofibreâ. The fibrous cellulosic material successfully reduced the extreme torque encountered while drilling the well.

"Horizontal drilling helped TOTAL increase production in the Cuenca Marina Austral field without building new platforms, thereby keeping investment costs low" said Edgar Ortiz, president of Halliburton Energy Services.

"This project reflects the Baroid team's growing expertise in extreme ERD drilling fluids technology," said Jean Marc Braun, Baroid Product Service Line Manager for Argentina and Bolivia. "To date, Baroid has provided the fluids work for 13 of the top 15 ERD wells in the world."

Baroid supplies fluids management products and services to the drilling industry. TOTAL Austral is the operator on this project, alongside "P.A.E." (60% BP AMOCO, 40% BRIDAS CORPORATION) which is the newly formed energy company active in the southern cone of South America, and Wintershall. TOTAL is a global energy exploration, production and distribution company. BP Amoco is a newly formed group of companies operating in the energy and petrochemical industries. Wintershall is the largest European subsidiary of the BASF Group and is involved in the production of petroleum and natural gas.
