Halliburton leads disaster relief effort in Marshall Islands

DALLAS - Brown & Root Services, a business unit of Halliburton Company (NYSE:HAL), is mobilizing people and equipment to provide fresh potable water to residents of the Marshall Islands, a U.S. trust territory in the Pacific suffering from severe drought. The islands were recently declared a disaster area by President Clinton.

In a contract coordinated through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Brown & Root will purify seawater and then replenish depleted water reservoirs on the islands of Majuro, Kwajalein, and Juluit. The company will bring in water purification units, tankers, water storage devices, and trucks. The first aircraft carrying equipment will leave on Sunday from the West Coast.

"Brown & Root's experience with supporting contingency operations for U.S. military forces and disaster relief operations enables us to respond immediately to this humanitarian need," said Randy Harl, president, Brown & Root Services.

The company has provided military support in locations such as Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Rwanda, Zaire, Italy, Haiti, Bosnia, Hungary, and Croatia.

Halliburton is one of the world's largest diversified energy services, engineering, maintenance, and construction companies. Founded in 1919, Halliburton provides a broad range of energy services and products, industrial and marine engineering, and construction services.
