FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 27, 1997
Halliburton And Phillips Set New Drilling Record
HOUSTON, Texas - On June 24, 1997, Phillips Petroleum Company announced a world departure record on the Xijiang 24-3-A14 well in the South China Sea. The well extended 26,446 feet, or more than five miles, from the Xijiang 24-3 platform. The well also set a record for China's longest measured-depth well at 30,308 feet.
A key drilling technology used in the record well was Halliburton's Telemetry Regulated Angle Control System (TRACS).
TRACS is the industry's leading intelligent adjustable inclination control system. It enables the driller to remotely adjust stabilizer blade diameter so that wellbore inclination can be controlled real-time while in a rotary drilling mode. This increases penetration rates and enables longer extensions of horizontal wells.
TRACS was awarded the Petroleum Engineer International Special Meritorious Award for Engineering Innovation in 1994. In 1995, TRACS enabled the previous world record for departure on BP Exploration's M-5 well at their Wytch Farm location in Southern England. BP's M-5 well extended 26,361 feet. TRACS has since been deployed throughout the world, including the North Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Middle East, and Australia.
Phillips' Xijiang 24-3 is located 80 miles south of Hong Kong in the South China Sea. The A14 well encountered 14 oil-bearing reservoir sands containing a total of 246 feet of net pay. In addition to the TRACS system, Halliburton provided well planning directional drilling supervision and geological support on the record well.
Phillips is operator of the Xijiang 24-3 field with a 24.5 percent interest. The China National Offshore Oil Corporation has 51 percent; Pecten Orient Company, an affiliate of Shell Oil Company has 12.5 percent and Shell Exploration (China) Limited has the remaining 12 percent.
Halliburton Energy Services Inc., a Halliburton Company organization (NYSE: HAL), is a leading supplier of products, services and integrated solutions to the energy industry on a global basis.
